Gower Street projections feature in the latest Annual Report published by The International Union of Cinemas (UNIC). The trade association representing exhibitors and their national associations across 39 European territories announced the publication of its Annual Report 2022 on Tuesday, June 21 at CineEurope in Barcelona.

In his Welcome & Executive Summary, UNIC President Phil Clapp calls 2022 “a pivotal year for the industry” before referencing early global forecasting by “leading industry analysts Gower Street Analytics”. Featured alongside the quote is Gower Street’s (April 2022) estimate of +62% predicted growth from 2021 at the EMEA (Europe, Middle East, and Africa) box office in 2022.

The April 2022 projections are referenced again in the main “Cinema-Going in Europe in 2021: Facts And Figures” portion of the report on Page. 12. Here both 2022 projected box office figures and percentage gains over 2021 are quoted for the EMEA region and the full Global box office. The Global 2022 forecast featured again in a pull-out on Page. 40 in comparison to actual Global box office numbers from each of the previous three years 2019-2021.

On Wednesday (June 22) at CineEurope, Gower Street CEO Dimitrios Mitsinikos revealed the latest mid-year update of our 2022 projection. We are currently estimating a year-end Global box office of $30.5 billion in 2022. This is split out into Domestic, China, EMEA, and the remainder of International (exc. EMEA and China) in the image below, which was shown at the presentation in Barcelona.

Gower Street’s projections, as featured in the UNIC report, were subsequently picked up in the media. These included by Scott Roxborough in The Hollywood Reporter, in an article titled ‘COVID Cost European Cinemas “At Least” $20B in Losses in 2020-2021, Says Trade Group‘ which includes the stand-first ‘International exhibitors group UNIC is forecasting a box office bounce back for 2022’. Germany’s Blickpunkt Film also picked up the projections in their coverage of the UNIC announcement in an article titled ‘UNIC sieht zweistelligen Milliardenschaden für Kinos‘ by Marc Mensch. The Blickpunkt article also referenced numbers from our Global Box Office Tracker (GBOT) article for May, written by our Chief Analyst Thomas Beranek.
