Gower Street 2023 projections and 2022 actuals featured prominently in the latest Annual Report published by The International Union of Cinemas (UNIC). The trade association representing exhibitors and their national associations across 39 European territories announced the publication of its Annual Report 2023 on Tuesday, June 20 at CineEurope in Barcelona.
In his Welcome & Executive Summary, UNIC President Phil Clapp makes reference to Gower Street’s current global forecast for this year. Phil says: “2023 will be a pivotal year for the industry. Leading industry analysts Gower Street Analytics have recently increased their forecast on the global box office for 2023 to $32 billion, a 10% improvement from the initial estimate of $29 billion announced back in December 2022.” Featured alongside the quote is Gower Street’s estimate of +23% predicted growth from 2022 at the EMEA (Europe, Middle East, and Africa) box office in 2023.
Gower Street’s actuals for the EMEA region, announced, alongside the rest of the global figures, on January 5 of this year feature on page 8 of the Annual Report in the ‘Cinema-going in Europe in 2022: Facts And Figures’ section. The 2023 projection is also referred to on page 11 of this section.
The 2023 projection once again features on page 26 in an article titled ‘European cinemas on the path to recovery’, alongside the current $8.2 billion forecast for the EMEA region.

The projections were also once again picked up by multiple media outlets following the publication of the UNIC Annual Report including Boxoffice Pro.
A busy CineEurope also saw Lucy Jones, Comscore Movies executive director for UK & Ireland, Italy, Middle East and Africa, present the latest European box office and admissions data on Monday. The presentation included Gower Street’s EMEA projections for 2023 with and without Russia. CineEurope is the official convention of UNIC and this year ran from June 19-22 in Barcelona. This year three of Gower Street’s team were in attendance: CEO Dimitrios Mitsinikos, Chief Analyst Thomas Beranek, and Box Office Analyst Lora Bogdanova.
