Gower Street was once again proud to be invited to partner with the UK Film Distributor’s Association on their FDA Yearbook 2021.
This marks the second consecutive year that Gower Street has contributed to the annual publication, which covers all the major news and trends of the past year in the UK distribution sector. Of course, as FDA CEO Andy Leyshon describes it in his Foreword to this year’s edition, “2020 was a year like no other” with the global Coronavirus pandemic having a significant impact. The exhibition business was devastated in 2020, while VOD streaming services surged. Leyshon’s clearly stated goal for the 2021 Yearbook is to “stand as a record of our times, as the official documentation of the year that the film industry faced its greatest challenge head on and then started its journey of recovery to a brighter, bolder future.”
Using data from Comscore, a long-running and continuing partner of the FDA on the Yearbook, Gower Street provided a variety of visual content. These included a 5-Year Box Office Trend graph for UK/Ireland (See page 13) as well as a bespoke graphic on the changing levels of physical cinemas open across the UK/Ireland market and the market share those cinemas represented throughout the year (See page 23).
In the ‘Worldwide Round-Up’ section (beginning page 104) Gower Street provided a visual comparison of how box office in 2020 was broken down by global box office region and key markets in contrast to 2019 (page 106), as well as 5-Year Trend graphs for US/Canada, China, Japan, France, and South Korea.
Gower Street’s Senior Box Office Analyst, Delphine Lievens, also contributed an article to the Yearbook: “Elevating Diverse Voices” (See pages 92-95).
A must-have reference guide, the FDA Yearbook 2021 was unfortunately unable to have its traditional official launch event this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
